| How to Find Free Moving Boxes |
| Comment: Good tip. Another is to check with local liquor stores. Their boxes are heavy duty and often divided to prevent bottle breakage. |

| Simple Make Your Own Baby Food |
Comment: The most important thing with baby food meaning solids is to delay feeding it to them for as long as possible. It takes a lot of energy to digest solids. Let that energy go into their brains developing.
With my first child she did not have solids until over six months. At that point she was snatching the food off the table. She was ready for it. |

| Got Any Ideas for Cheap and Healthy 'Brown Bag' Lunches? |
Comment: My husband used to have a microwave at his old job so he did leftovers, a fruit, a sandwhich. He also ate breakfast there at break because he left at 6:00. I always packed oatmeal, dried blueberries, and dried milk in a container...add water, nuke, eat.
Now he is in different locations. Sandwhiches, cottage cheese (cuts cravings), almonds, and fruit. I also pack water in a reusable container so he isn't tempted by pop, or coffee. I can't believe what people pay to eat out. I have a friend who spends about $350 a month, and on top of that is gaining weight from the huge amount of unhealthy food. A guy my husband works with started bringing his own lunch a month ago, and lost 20 lbs. eating cheapper after only one month. Health is worth so much more than the savings on the food budget. |

Comment: I'm not big on bread or sandwiches, so I wash a romaine lettuce leaf, and roll it up with thin-sliced low-fat swiss and slices of roast beef or chicken. Secure roll with a toothpick, and there you have it. Does not need mayo or anything! Nice and neat finger food.
I also thread little meatballs and pineapple chunks on toothpicks; or use cheese chunks with grapes, mandarin orange segments, etc.
Stay healthy! |

| What Can You Eat on a Food Stamp Budget? |
Comment: I was a middle class, college educated woman. I ran my own (small) business. I took care of my family. I was married (happily I thought) for 20 years...and then he left.
Overnight I came to realise that I was unemployable (over 45)and a bit of a dinosaur when it came to technology. I got by for a while. I struggled to pay high heating bills (NYS) and to cover ever increasing Utility bills. I got rid of the tv. I could not afford to keep my car. I cut everything to the bone but none of my cutbacks were enough.
SO I went to social services to ask for help. They humiliated me. The woman behind the desk screamed at me and left me in tears. I would have left then but the person who drove me there made me follow through. They fingerprinted me, took my photograph and gave me a "client" number. And just like that I was "in the system". I now know how prisoners feel.
Having gone through the process of getting the card I went to the store to get much needed food. The teenaged girl behind the cash register sneered at me. I cringed and took my food. The next time I used it at a different store...same thing happened. Now whenever I use it I don't make eye contact. They don't say thank you to me when I leave like they used to when I paid cash. They don't hand me my grocery bags.
I cook from scratch, always have. I use coupons (that seems to make cashiers angrier by the way... food stamps and coupons!) I stockpile where I can go that I can get off the card and get back some sort of self respect.
I planted a garden. I don't buy (and never have) soda, chips or cookies. I do buy special diet foods because of my children's allergies - which further angers the cashiers because this stuff is not cheap.
I have suffered all sorts of humiliation at the hands of people who naysay food stamps. There are some (few) who misuse this benefit but for the most part the people who use food stamps are people like you...they NEVER thought they would ever need them.
You are all one paycheck, one divorce, one health crisis etc, away from food stamps, nasty social services employees and snearing teenage cashiers. And when that day comes...although I hope it never does, may you find compassion from those around you.

| How Do I Clean Greasy T-Shirts? |
| Comment: Lestoil - - for the poster above who wanted to know where you can buy it . . our local grocery store has it in the housewares/laundry section, . I've seen it at Dollar General , you could try Walmart . I thought it was one of those 'staple' cleaners, like Murphy's Oil Soap that's been around for years. . . . it works great. |

| Lots of Free Options for Preparing and Filing Your Taxes |
Comment: Turbotax does have a free edition for easy tax filing , - people with no extra items like stocks, mutual fund sell offs, etc. - but if you have more complicated tax items, like rental income, depreciation schedules, capital gains tax schedules, mutual fund distributions, i./e. for the 'deluxe' edition , there is a fee but it's cheaper than a tax professional, about $49 right now, but still not a bad charge!! the state filing is extra but still a good value. . . . also, TaxAct is free but charges a small amt for other filings
We've been using TurboTax for years so all our past year's info is on there so we just keep using it as they transfer everything from year to year - so you don't have to write in everything every year , which saves us lots of time and headaches. |

| Switching to Store-Brand Razor Blades |
Comment: I'm a female, and I read once that if you dry your razor off (I shake it off and blot it with a towel) and store it outside of the shower where moisture can't get to it, it will last a long time. I've been doing that for a few years now, and have definitely gotten way more use out of them.
Watch the Sunday paper for good coupons, wait until they are on sale, then stock up on razors and refills! |

| How Do You Save Money on Pet Care? |
Comment: Please, don't ever use Dog flea prevention on cats!! It can be deadly for a cat. My sister accidentally did this and her cat later( days) died a slow death.
I also have many rescued cats and i know that it can be a challenge to de-flea all of them.
I buy the large cans of cat food at walmart and put it into a bowl, then I add a little bit of warm water and mix it well. After that, I pour it into individual dishes for them. So one can gives all of them enough to please their appetites. Of course they get all of the dried food that they want. |

| How to Make Your Own Shower Body Wash |
| Comment: I understand that it's not as cost-effective as dish soap, but I would spring for Dr. Bronner's. It's easy on the skin, it's already scented, and it's potent enough that you can really stretch a bottle out. |

| Got Any Ideas for Cheap and Healthy 'Brown Bag' Lunches? |
| Comment: I try to use a combination of strategies. Leftovers are always great: roast beef, barbecued pork, fried/baked chicken, meatloaf, spaghetti, chili, soups, lasagne--almost anything works. And if you have access to a microwave, you can literally recreate whole dinners. I also make chicken salad and tuna salad either for sandwiches or as main dish salads. Preparing salad greens at the beginning of the week makes main dish salads a breeze. Just add some chopped veges and meat left from one of your dinners and a little dressing. Cottage cheese and yogurt can also be used either as main dishes or as sides with sandwiches or salads. Fruit makes a wonderful dessert or have a fruit salad with cottage cheese. For something sweet for a snack or dessert, I make cookies, bake cakes in small loaf pans (which I can then freeze) and take slices to work, or make brownies. |

| Got Any Ideas for Cheap and Healthy 'Brown Bag' Lunches? |
| Comment: I make a batch of cookies and or granola bars on the weekend, then wrap them into individual serving sizes. Also make potato salad or macaroni salad and do the same. The lunch box is insulated, so things stay cool. I buy all ingredients in bulk and use coupons. I also make my husband gatorade from powder in a large water bottle with ice. the ice keeps it cold most of the day as the ice melts. Much cheaper than buying drinks. Granola bar recipes can be found online. I use the one from "The Tightwad Gazette" and alter ingredients according to what I have on hand. |
