Be willing to eat a part of an animal that isn't the most popular...
About twice a year I order turkey wings. There's only 2 of us and a single turkey wing suits us nicely for one meal. The cost is usually around .65 a pound, year round. Bones/skin go into the stock pot, along with any left over meat.
There's usually two wings per package and that's two meals. It's usually less than a dollar seventy-five a package, so we get 4 meals and stock from one package.
Salmon backs? A friend of mine who lived in a harbor town served me salmon backs for dinner once. They're "dark" meat, but they're salmon just the same. If I lived near a port, I'd be asking my local fish market for salmon backs! (Or the equivalent.) When I've asked, sometimes I've gotten whatever salmon bits they had left after fileting for FREE.
Make friends with your local butcher, even at chain supermarkets, you CAN save a lot of money. But also look for less used forms of meat that you can get cheaply, like the salmon backs and turkey wings. |
