Buy Fresh Dairy from your Local Farmer

Submitted by: anonymous  02/19/2009 10:41 AM

In South Carolina there are dairies that sell raw fresh farm milk (state certfied)straight from the farm at only $4.00 or less a gallon. It's a lot better than the big-agri milk sold in most supermarkets full of hormones and antibiotics. Also, fresh farm milk is much better for you since they don't heat it and destroy all the good enzymes and vitamins a body needs.

Over 25 states allow the sell of fresh farm milk to the consumer. If you are unsure, go to realmilk.com and click on "where" on the left side to find out about your state.

My family has been enjoying raw milk for over a year now and love the rich taste and real cream that floats to the top. Also, You'll never eat better ice-cream than one that's made from fresh farm milk.

I am so in agreement. Ultra-pasteurized milk (the milk in the stores that used to be just pasteurized) is one of the worst things you can drink. Think about it, it can keep for weeks without spoilage. That's soooo unnatural. It makes you wonder what do they do to this stuff. When it's given to cats it causes severe diarrhea. Raw milk doesn't. Which is best?

I'm all for saving money on milk, as I drink A LOT of it! However, I can't stand the taste of anything other than skim milk. The large state University that's close to my home has a dairy sciences program, and there's a shop on campus that sells milk products at a good discount. There's also a "beef and poultry" lab on campus, and my family and I buy fresh, great-quality meats there at a very reasonable price. While we've cut way down on our meat-eating, it sure is delicious as an additive to our budget meals!

Raw milk may be good, but lysteria is bad. Be safe and be sure to work only with farmers proven to be very clean.

I can't vouch for this personally, but several sources that I consider reliable claim that while there are always a number of illnesses caused by milk and milk products, not a single milk-related illness has come from raw milk sold by certified farmers.

Ironically, the first places closed down when there is a milk scare are those illness-free farms!!! Apparently, this is due to the huge political influence of the major agribusiness milk companies.

Anyone know something about this?

I have been purchasing certified organic non-homogenized milk from my local farmer for the past six months. It's about 1.50 cheaper than in the grocery store and I know where my milk comes from!

What do you mean by major agribusiness milk companies? All real dairy milk comes from cows raised on farms, most of which are family-owned, and though some may be large, they still have to meet strict guidelines of cleanliness to allow milk to leave thier farms. "hormones' are naturally found in milk, and added hormones are not used in milk production. Also, every load of milk is tested for anitbiotics, which are used to help heal cows that may be sick. The milk from these cows is not allowed to be mixed in with other milk, it is dumped. If a treated cow is accidentally milked with the other cows milk, that milk will be dumped as well. As this is a loss of income for everyone involved, farmers make sure they are careful not to let this happen. As I said before every load of milk is tested, and is safe to drink. Yes, some vitamins may be lost in processing, but most are retained and milk wheather from the farmer, the store, orgainic or not, has all the same nutrition. If you want to pay extra for flavor, go ahead, but it is all the same.
