Geico or Progressive? My Experience

Submitted by: anonymous  02/19/2009 11:24 AM

My husband and I own one car, a 1998 Mercury Grand Marquis. He is Australian and didn't have a U.S. license but only an Australian driver's license. Geico and Progressive are two insurance companies that agreed to insure him anyway. Not all insurance companies will insure a foreigner without a U.S. driver's licence. I have an excellent driving record.

With Geico, our policy was $460 for 6 months for only uninsured motorists and liability insurance, a 100/200/100 policy. We didn't buy collision since our car is over 10 years old. We were told that this rate would be reduced considerably once he obtained a U.S. driver's license. The day he got his driver's license, I called Geico to get a discount but we were told by Geico that there would be no discount, that the price would reamain the same, $460 for six months.

I then decided to go to Progressive for a quote. The difference in price was amazing at only $140 for 6 months, and a better policy of 100/300/100 for liability and uninsured motorists.

Moral of the story, shop around online. It can save you a lot of money.

We can't be told enough to shop around for car insurance. I did the same thing and bundled with a carrier that had our homeowner's and when I decided to look around, I saved a lot. Shopping around leads to savings - no doubt about it.

Please be wary if Progressive's great rates! I don't have their insurance, but was hit by a person who did. They don't treat people very nice and they make a lot of demands for getting that great rate.

Kelly,

I've not yet seen an instance in which kids under 25, away at college, are NOT considered ok to be on the policy. I've worked for two different ins companies as well as shop around annually for the best rate.

Hi Kelly:

I am under 25, and have lived away from home (while at school) for the last six years. I drive a car that is on my dad's name and the insurance still insures me under my father's policy.

Regards Seh's posting:

Progressive in San Diego was Great.
I was hit by a young male Sudanese driver, a few months ago, who was insured by Progressive. The CHP accident report, did not mention, I was hit on both sides of my car. He hit me on my car's right side, spun out of control in front of me, and then hit the left side. Progressive was friendly, reparied all damage, gave me a free loaner car & it was no Fuss or Muss for me.

ADT alarm company. I have an alarm in my house because in my area there have been a lot of break in. When I installed my alarm over 3 years ago , I was told that if I recommended anyone I would get a month free. My mother and my brother two different customers decided to go with ADT and I have called more than 5 times , its been six months and everyone acts like they do not know what I am talking about. This is called false advertisement

Jerry said it the best. There is no way to know who will give you the best rate unless you shop around. I have been an insurance agent with Liberty Mutual and an Independent representing Allstate, Progressive, Travelers, Farmers and others and each company has there own unique metric to determine rates. Some offer lower rates if you actually request higher limits. There thinking is that you are more responsible and less like to file a false claim or be in an accident. I started a website where you compare rates all at once check it out. QuoteMatcher.com
