Buy Deli Bulk Ends

Submitted by: smrtshppr  05/09/2008 1:38 PM

Deli meat & cheese prices are outrageous right now-I now shop for the "bulk ends" as they are usually $1.99/lb versus $6-10/lb at the counter. "bulk ends" are the portion of the deli meat or cheese that is too small to slice, so they just cut them up and sell unsliced. They taste great and actually I like the ham ends as they are great for dicing up for chef's salads. Ask the supermarket deli department where to find these--they are usually nearby. The Shaw's near me has them located with the hummus, fresh salsa and pickles right next to the deli counter.

They also usually have sliced cheese and sliced luncheon meat available in the bulk ends area. The meat is typically only a day or two old (and it’s not really old – just that it was sliced prior to my visit to the supermarket) and it is dated so you know what you’re dealing with. It’s almost like buying fresh-sliced deli meat, only a little bit cheaper (and still preferred over the pre-packaged sliced meat).
