17 Useful Online Freebies

Submitted by: krs  02/24/2009 5:57 PM

I stumbled across this article, Surprising Things You Can Get for Free (or Almost), in Women's Day Magazine (WDM) and was glad I did. The article was full of really useful online freebies, from free business cards to free classes to free computer help! The author is also a skeptic and made sure to explain why these offers are not too good to be true. I will be taking full advantage of these free online offers.
Here's a summary of the freebies-hope you find these helpful:

1. Business Cards Go to Vistaprint.com for 250 free business cards. You can choose from 42 designs with preset fonts and colors. Any changes will cost $9.99+ and to omit the Vista logo on the back of your card is an added $5.99. Before checking out, they'll try to sell you on about 10 pages of extras-decals, t-shirts, magnets, before taking you to the checkout where my shipping costs for 250 free cards was $5.45WDM also warned that you can expect to hear pretty frequently from Vistaprint once they get a hold of your contact information. Still was worth it for me and I found the perfect design for my sister-in-laws daycare business.

2. Expert Computer Help Go to protonic.com for free online computer help. Simply register to the site and then you'll be able to ask a community of computer support technicians your question.

3. Foreign Language Lessons The BBC offers free classes to learn the basics of Spanish, French, German, Italian, Greek, Chinese and Portuguese. For example, the beginning Spanish course, Spanish Steps, is 12 week interactive course that introduces you to the spoken Spanish language using games, videos and explanations all online and all free. Great if you are planning a trip abroad.

4. Business Classes Sign up for free business classes at SBA.gov, each are about 30 minutes and free and cover a range of topics: Retirement Planning, Accounting 101, How to Prepare a Business Plan.....

5. Credit Report At AnnualCreditReport.com you can get a free credit report. By law you are entitled to 1 free credit report each year. Be careful when you click through to make sure you are getting the free credit report!

6. Wi-Fi Hot SpotsThis is awesome! A directory of locations that offer free Wi-Fi. Got to WiFiFreeSpot.com and then select your state and then scroll down to see where there is free Wi-Fi offered in your town. Even my small town had some listings.

7. Time Management Organizer Check out Remember the Milk to create your own online time management reminders. You can choose to reminded by email, SMS, IM etc and can include reminders of locations to really map out your day.

8. Silver Jewelry Silver Jewelry Club offers free silver jewelry and just charges the cost of shipping.

9. Online Checking Account ING Direct now has an online checking account, Electric Orange, that is paperless and completely free and with a modest interest rate of 0.49%.

10. Cookbooks There are all sorts of free online recipe sites out there. WDM recommends Allrecipes.com, but I also like Epicurious.com and Cooking Light.com for great free recipes.

11. Sheet Music The Mutopia Project offers free access to over 1500 sheet music editions of classical music.

12. Radio Service I first heard about Pandora on Tiphero.com. It's great, you can create free music stations based on your favorite songs and artists.
Related Tip: Listen to Your Favorite Artists for Free w/Pandora

13. Gently Used Stuff Freecycle is a non-profit site where people can give or get stuff for free. Mostly lists donated and used office equipment.
Related Tips: How to Save Money on Freecycle.org and Find Free Stuff at Freecycle.org

14. Photo Organizer Yet another free google product, Picasa this one keeps all your online photos organized.

15. Spam Filter Try spamato.net and download their free spam filter to help keep you inbox spam-free.

16. Directory Assistance Call 800-FREE-411 for free directory assistance, after listening to a brief ad first. Or skip the advertising and use Google's 411 service: Free Phone Information Google 411

17. Family Calendar Keeping dates straight with my family is like a game of operator, you are never sure who you told and when each event is, if only my family were all online this would be the answer -- an online family calendar merge to keep all your families events and trips straight: Famundo.com is free unless you want to upgrade to a fancier version.

VistaPrint is great, but they get you on the shipping! Google around for coupon codes - I usually get 250 free, then as many other 250 card sets for $1.74.

Regarding
tip #1 ~ Yes, VistaPrint will send you tons of email (but you can opt out) and I paid $6.95 in shipping. Ok, they have to make *some* money to stay in business...

tip #10 ~ RecipeZaar.com is also quite awesome!

tip #13 ~ it's amazing how many great things you can get on freecycle and how quickly you can clear out your ... stuff (one man's trash is another man's treasure!)

Tip #13~While Frecycle is more widely known ReUseIt Network.org is also a good place to get & give for the reduce, reuse, & recycle part of our lives. Launched in 2007 they are committed to the principles of Conservation, Education, Accountability, & Community. While they are the 'new kid on the block' in this economy it pays to keep all your options open.

I may be a nay sayer but free is the most used word on the internet. I have been bamboozled too many times tryng to get free items . I spent 2 1/2 hrs. being shipped thru the same adds over and over again .I received nothing but phone solicitations for my time. Why are they not obliged to keep their false advertising off the computer I payed hundreds of dollars for.

I am an avid reader, and discovered Paper Back Swap a few years ago. At their site, you sign up for a free account, list your used books for others to request, and when you ship a book to another member, you receive a credit, with which you can then request a book of your choosing. While this didn't cut down on the number of books I had in the house, it did keep me from spending more money on new books. All it costs is shipping. www.paperbackswap.com
{They also have a site called Swap-a-DVD where you can trade movies. No more Blockbusters or Netflix!)

I am very leery of "free" stuff and am always educating my children on what "free" really means, as they excitedly relate to me the newest "free" offer they hear. However, I plan on trying some of these sites to see if they really are worth it. I still love the idea of "free" even if it's hardly ever true.

Try supercook.com for recipes. You list the ingredients you have on hand and they locate a recipe you can make with those ingredients. Really easy to use.

As a retired Chef I concure, recipeZarr.com is the most incredible site ever. It's free to join and use unless you want to make your own cookbook and chat with other members. Then there is a modest yearly fee for the premium membersip.Well worth it for the serious cook, profesional.Home cooks will find this the only site you will ever need.

(DFW TEXAS) Neither the French nor the Spanish on the BBC site worked for me. It said "not available in your area." From the other comments from different areas o f the U.S. I wonder if we are blocked out?

In order to get #3, the free language courses from BBC, you need to choose the email course.
Go to www.bbc.com
Look on the left hand side of the page, and you will see:
Languages in 12 Weeks. Beginners' courses.
Choose your language, enter your email address, and learn a new language.
I am about to try and learn a new language!
They even give you a certificate of completion at the end.

I also love free ebooks from Project Gutenberg, where I download epub documents for my B & N Nook. I can search by category as well as author, my favorite being mystery and detective fiction. These are all books which are in the public domain (therefore, many are from the late 1800s and early 1900s), such as nearly all of the Arthur Conan Doyle books, and even include some audiobooks. I go to www.gutenberg.org each week and select new books to read.
