"9 Recession-Proof Careers" (Reader's Digest)

Submitted by: Tip Hero  02/25/2009 10:53 AM

With the economy continuing to limp along and what seems like more and more companies filing for bankruptcy and laying people off, it's hard to stay positive. If you've got a job, you're probably stressed about keeping it. If you don't have one, you're stressed about finding one -- particularly as the competition picks up with more and moer people filing for unemployment each week.

Well, thankfully, Reader's Digest provides a list of nine recession-proof careers that offer a bit of hope among all of this doom and gloom. While a number of industries are struggling and will continue to struggle, not all will. And in fact, some could thrive in the years ahead (particularly those that are the recipients of large government spending).

The nine careers (fields, really) are listed below, along with specific jobs within each. For more color on the various careers, click through to the article to find out more about them -- including median salary for each.

Also, we've linked to a few other related tips that we thought you might enjoy -- or at least will help reduce stress and perhaps inspire.

1. Education - "Math and science teachers will be in demand..."

2. Energy - "The real boost will come from the new administration's commitment to a more efficient national energy system."

3. Environment - "Green is getting the green light."

4. Financial Services - Believe it or not, "financial services have a bright future."

5. Government - "More than half a million federal employees will retire by 2016" and "There will also be opportunities at the state and local levels."

6. Health Care - "Health care is a growing industry, and not just for health care professionals. There will also be jobs for secretaries, accountants, and administrators."

7. International Business - "The global economy is only going to grow."

8. Law Enforcment - "Crime doesn't go down in a recession. It may even increase."

9. Technology - "New uses of technology ... mean that this sector will continue to be strong."

I've read that construction jobs and jobs in science/technology research fields should get a boost from the stimulus bill. Green energy and jobs in infrastructure in particular. Are there any free classes on how to operate a bulldozer?

I found this on the White House Blog-they put together a fact sheet that shows state-by-state, how many jobs the plan will create. Here is the link to the document, you can scroll to find out what the "American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan" could do for your state, basically lays out the numbers for how many jobs, tax cuts, unemployment benefits will be made available by state. Maybe I'll move to California they are hoping to create 421,000 jobs, Texas, 285,700 or Florida 218,300 as opposed to the 32,000 in my state..... http://tinyurl.com/cvkhlv

Please don't call it recession-proof, Reader's Digest. The last thing America needs right now is more hyperbole! No job or career path is *ever* recession-proof.

I couldn't agree less with this article! I know people in education, financial, government, health care and law enforcement. These people are all estabalished in their careers and ALL are worried...there are NO jobs that are guaranteed!

After all, if your career depends on bills being paid as in health care, people are NOT paying their bills. Government, education or law enforcement - come on, they are ALL cutting budgets whereever they can...if you lost your home, you aren't paying taxes. If you don't have a job, you aren't paying taxes - that's how these salaries are being paid. Think about it.

Sadly, the only recession proof career I can think of is the funeral business.

I also wanted to note that the military is always looking for good men and woman to serve the Country. We have been a military family for 22 years and the Army has been great to us. The Army allows us to never have to worry about money, housing, schooling, medical. I also have the opportunities as a spouse to stay home with my children. This is also possible by the wonderful people, buissness's and communities that support our soldiers and their families.
