It's hard enough finding a job these days. And now, in addition to battlling a rising number of out-of-work job seekers, you have to beware of online job posting scams.
From a recent Wall Street Journal article posted on Yahoo: "If you're launching an online job hunt for the first time in a while; take caution. What may look like an ad for employment may lead to something entirely different, like a hard sell for career services or job-training manuals. Or worse, it might be a plan by identity thieves to get you to share sensitive personal information via "phishing" expeditions."
The article provides a number of tips for how to avoid these scams, including and most importantly, not giving out any private information about yourself online. "The ads to most watch out for are those pretending to offer a job but are really trying to get you to give up personal information, such as a bank-account or Social Security number."
Also, if the job posting lacks details about the company or the position, that's a red flag. Same goes for salary ranges that are really wide (e.g., $50,000 spread).
