Save Money by Buying Generic Drugs

Submitted by: grammy vail  02/25/2009 1:28 PM

I work at a pharmacy and I can't tell you how many folks buy generic drugs. The fact is, 99% of our sales are in generic drugs-and no, I dont work for any of the big chains. Generic drugs by law have to have the exact same ingredients in the exact same amounts that name brand drugs have in them. The only thing that can be different is the filler and the color. People who say they are allergic to generics are most likely allergic to the color or filler. The difference in price can be 80% and up!, never buy name brand if it comes generic.

Also, when buying antibiotics such as amoxillin that your dentist writes for usually a dose of 4 capsules, one hour before your appointment? The dentist will often only write for a total of four capsules, and four or five refills-since the days supply is 1 for the original rx. Ask your pharmacist if you can get all of the rx, refills and all, at the same time. Since your insurance would see all refills as a one month supply (1 day times four or five would be five day supply) it's perfectly legal and you would save 4 to 5 co-pays. Even if you are paying cash you would save lots of cash!!!!

Actually, filler and color are not the only things that are different. Generic drugs are "identical" only in that they must have +/- 20% of the bioequivalency range of the branded product. +/- 20% can be a *huge* difference - manifesting in some unpleasant side effects - for certain people and certain classes of drugs.

Also, but rarely, the branded can be cheaper than the generic.

A couple of year ago my dentist stopped requiring me to take the antibiotics for my heart murmur. He said that studies have found they do more harm than good.

So ask your dentist the next time you go for a cleaning if he has heard of the study. You may not need those drugs after all!!

This is a terrible tip. It is penny wise and dollar foolish.

There are difficulties with certain generic drugs. For instance , generic opthalmic drugs or statins, cholesterol lowering are INFERIOR to their brand name counterparts. There are studies. Do yourself a favor, Google your meds BEFORE you buy generic to see if there is a problem with your specific medication.

It is definitely worth looking into before you buy generic. Talk to your doctor and ask about cheaper alternatives and they'll usually give you a sample so you can test to see if you'll have any negative reactions. I have been using generic prescriptions for years $10/bottle versus $50. $480 in savings each year. Worth it for me.

Recently I had generic Ambien refilled at Publix.

The result was no more than an aspirin, (although the price was good.) I found they were made in INDIA, a THIRD WORLD COUNTRY. What the hell is wrong with them being made in the USA?

I will not knowingly eat a candy bar made in INDIA.

I suppose we will soon get them from Haiti.
