Slow Cooker for the Best Oatmeal Ever

Submitted by: anonymous  02/27/2009 8:10 PM

I love hot oatmeal on a cold winter's morning. For one serving I use the smallest slow cooker: the pint size. This cooks on low heat only, so I find that the quick oats come out better. Just put 1/2 cup of quick oats, one cup of water and a dash of salt in the cooker and plug in at bedtime. You will wake up to delicious hot oatmeal. For two servings use the quart size cooker regular old fashioned oats and double the ingredients. If you are feeling ambitious you can add a peeled, sliced apple to stew in the cereal. Cook on Low overnight.

I don't see why this wouldn't work for steel cut oats......I plan to try it soon! I usually cook them in the morning while I'm getting ready for the day...however this sounds even easier.

Sounds like a great idea. However, to save money, shouldn't we eliminate the overnight slowcooker and simply cook it in the morning? Thanks!

I place 1/2 cup oatmeal, 1/4 cup craisins or raisings, 1 T. flaxseed and 1 cup of milk in a 4-cup Pyrex cup. Cook it for three minutes and it's done.

Microwave oatmeal: 1 cup milk, 1/2 cup oatmeal, 1-2 Tbsps. flaxseed, 1/3 cup raisins. Place in 4 cup Pyrex measuring cup for three minutes. Works like a charm.

When doing this in the microwave does the oatmeal tend to taste like glue? That is my biggest problem with instant. Even my 2 year old grandson wouldn't eat it. He went back home and his father wanted to know what I had given him. Not instant oatmeal.
When using the craisins I use a little of orange juice to soak them in in the fridge. works great and adds lots of flavor.
