I'm sure this works equally well with brown rice. Brown rice needs more cooking time but once it's cooked it's cooked.
Great recipe. Going to try this! |

I tried this today and would rate it a zero. I love cheap recipes but did not think this was worth the time or effort. I used white rice and followed the recipe (which I thought should have had more details). Sorry...but I thought others would like to know. |

This sounds like rice pudding without the milk. I think mixing in some milk or cream before putting it in the microwave would improve the dish. Use reconstituted dry milk plus a bit of butter if you want to save money. |

I have a few scenerios that have served me well.
#1...Banana,milk,vanilla smoothies with peanut butter on toast
Or
#2....Cheap plain oatmeal, flavored with cinnamon sugar(or brown sugar) and whatever cheap fruit I have in the house. Thats either sliced banans, raisons or diced apples.
#3....eggs,sliced bananas and toast.
The eggs can be boiled, scrambled or sunny side up. The toast can have butter or jam or both on it.
#4.cold ceral.Sliced bananans, with milk....
The cereal found on sale for $1 or less a box with coupons,( I did this at safeway 2 weeks ago, they put cereal $1 a box,I used coupons that were 75 cents off each box and got my cereal for a quarter a box)or in those huge malto meal bags or bulk bins...Also generic is good. The milk being powdered milk I prepared the night before in the blender with a bit of vannilla added to it.
****Banans are 29-69 cents per pound.
Bread can be anywhere from 50 cents-$2 a loaf.
Eggs can be $1-$ a dozen(or less on sale)
Peanut butter can be $2 a jar or less.
(but during the peanut scare, almond butter is $10 for 2 large jars at costco. We used it sparingly)
Milk and powdered milk fluctuates...I shop around.
Vannilla I can find at dollar stores or costco very cheap.
Quick oats I can find in bulk bins at health food sotrtores and gorecery stores. for 69cents or less per pound.
Cinnamon, sugar, brown sugar, honey I can all find at dollar stores, big lots or bulk bins at health food stores for cents on the $$ and fairly cheap.
You see an awful lot of banansas in my plans...Thats cause their dirt cheap, very nutritious and my kids adore them. If you are lucky enough to live somewhere tropical like florida or puerto rico you may even get them free. When I lived in Florida every house on our block had a banana tree and we would be begging people to take them....We would drop the extras at colleges, schools and food pantries just to get rid of them. My dad would take them to work and put them in the break room and pray people ate them... We started with two trees, that spread to four or five....We had sometimes 6+Bushels at a time(IN a month) Each bushel gave at least 20-30+ Huge bananas. So if you live somewhere tropical....get in touch with your inner banana. Also buy them on sale if you don't ,they freeze very very well....great for smoothies, bread, muffins etc. I even put them in pancake batter to stretch it and sweeten it. Most americans don't get nearly enough potassium so I don't think anyone could have too many bananas. |

Frugal Fruity Smoothies:
I have a Jack LaLanne juicer which I absolutely love. I raid the reduced produce rack for fruit, juice up a bunch, freeze in ice cube trays and store in big ziplocks.
To make a smoothie: put a handful of fruit cubes in a blender with a little milk, yogurt, protein powder (or all 3) and whizz away (try one with a splash of pina colada juice...it's divine). I haven't calculated the cost, but I'm sure it's less than a buck per serving.
I take a smoothie to work with me every morning in a thermal travel mug. It lasts a LONG time, is quite filling and YUM! |

My favorite low cost breakfast food is microwaved quick oats. The twist is to add a spoonful of peanut butter along with non fat milk and some sweetener after the cooking phase. The peanut butter melts, gives off a wonderful nutty aroma, and provides a good source of protein along with your grain. |
