Know How to Buy Produce & Waste Less

Submitted by: Tip Hero  03/10/2009 6:51 PM

One sure way to save money is to make sure you use up all of the food you buy. We strive hard to buy items on sale, use coupons, shop with a list, not shop hungry, and follow all of the other grocery shopping money-saving tips, and we feel pretty good when we look at the receipt and see our savings.

But most people probably don't go back to their receipts after all of the food is gone and deduct what was thrown away. We're not suggesting you do this -- and it probably would be really difficult to do even if you tried. But one area that we often find ourselves struggling with is throwing out produce that's gone bad.

If you buy fruits and vegetables that are either already bad (or have big sections that are rotten) or will be past their prime within a couple of days after purchasing them, you'll be throwing food away that could have otherwise been avoided.

Rachel Ray has a bunch of tips that can help you figure out how to buy produce. Click the link below to see her tips, along with a video of Rachel picking out produce (she gets far more applause than we'll ever get shopping for produce).

Also, do you have any tips of your own for how to buy produce? Do you know what to look for? Do you stand on one foot and jump up and down with a cantaloupe in hand? Share your techniques with us by leaving a comment below!

One thing I do is buy fresh raw vegetables and blanche them off the same day. Blanching is precooking, usually by boiling or steaming. Cook them to a point just short of what you would consider "done". Drain the vegetables well, then divide them up into appropriately sized portions for one meal for your family. freeze them in a container that can go from freezer to microwave. Just pull out one container and microwave it till hot. If you'd like, you can add slices of American cheese or cubes of something like Velveeta before you microwave it. Stir well when hot and POOF, Cheesy whatever-you-want.

You mentioned to shop with a list. My list is based on meals I plan to make each week. These meals are in turn based on whatever fresh produce is on sale. This helps because I buy only what I know I can use, for the most part. I plan on fresh vegetables for the beginning of the week and switch to frozen ones towards the end. If for some reason I don't cook as many meals as I had planned, no veggies are wasted. I'm very conservative when purchasing fresh fruit for snacking. I would rather run out than throw it out. If the fruit runs out before my next trip we just snack on other healthy foods.
