| Decided to invest in a bike for my husband so we can become more oil independent and found that bikes are expensive! Wanted to get a hybrid/cruiser style bike as most of our biking is in and around the city. Most decent hybrids (Trek, Raleight, Schwinn) are selling for around $300--in fact several salesman at bike specialty stores scoffed at me when I stated I wanted a bike for less than $300---I guess I have been out of the market for a while since I bought my last bike in the 90's!! We looked into used bikes, but those are hard to come by in a city--particularly in the spring and when gas prices are soaring--oops. So we checked out some non-specialty shops, looking at Sears, SportsAuthority, Amazon and although they had some bikes in the $119-250 range--you couldn't test ride them as they don't really stock many bikes. LLBean woudl be a good option if you hit them when I did--10% off bikes starting at $270. EMS, REI, were quite pricey $300 and up. We even looked into buying last years models hoping for a discount--but even still prices were about $300. Did manage to seek out Bicycle Bills in brighton, ma--they sell used bikes, but high end used bikes, so we end up going with a Raleigh Hyrbrid piced at $279.99. So we saved $20, but spent a lot of time shopping around. Ultimately, we look at the cost of the bike as 3.5 trips to the gas station........Word of advice if you are in the bike market--one saleswoman told us that she expects bike prices to go up 20-30% by the end of hte summer due to rising fuel costs in shipping the bikes and it's components around. |
