Shop Online for Best Deals on Bike Baskets

Submitted by: Urban Sherp  04/18/2008 12:18 PM

So thought that I would invest in a bike basket so I could officially give up my car for the summer and complete all of my errands on my bike.

Alas, I completely gave in to an impulse buy of a ToPeak MTX Rear Basket & Rack, it is just so stylish and brilliant concept in that the basket just pops right off of the bike rack so you can take it shopping and then just clips back in.

Total cost in a local bike shop $85.43......immediately had buyer's remorse, thinking that was an outrageous price to pay and as soon as I got the basket home--I went straight to the world wide web. It did not take long to find a better deal at 3 different online retailers:

Bike Somewhere $20.55 for the basket, but no rack

Bike Stop $20.95 for the basket & $27.95 for the rack

Amazon $20 for the basket & $25 for the rack.....

So I saved $40 by shopping online.

I worked at a ski shop one season and we made a killing on selling accessories which had the highest mark-ups in the store. Buying accessories at a bike shop is a convenience purchase and with most convenience purchases you end up paying way too much.
