DIY Dish Cloths

Submitted by: anonymous  03/19/2009 2:08 PM

I never buy dish cloths for my kitchen. When our clothing becomes too worn to take to the thrift store, I cut out the best parts and hem them on my sewing machine for use as dish cloths and sturdy, reusable rags. I've even cut up old undershirts and summer knit shirts in long spirals about an inch wide and crocheted them into new dish rags.

Great ideas.
I have also cut wearing out towels(usually the centers)and hemmed the good areas into dish cloths.

I have a ton of rags for that very same purpose. But storage is a little tight. To solve this, I took an old pillow case. I cut out 3 holes in the side of the bag near the bottom about the size of a deck of cards and re-enforced them with duct tape (I don't sew). I nailed the bag open, to a stud in my utillity room. I throw the clean rags in the top of the bag and pull out the number I need through the holes in the bottom like tissue. Of course, you need rags of a similar size or they jam the holes. This uses space above and at head level and I don't need a shelf.

This morning I made myself 8 new kitchen towels for nothing. I never throw out anything that has what I call "artistic value." I have an old beach towel that I no longer use for that purpose or even for a bath towel. Wild colors of black, yellow, blue, purple, green & more. I cut it up into 8 pieces, hemmed each one, and they are now beautiful little kitchen towels I can use for cleaning my kitchen or to just hang from my refrigerator door. So pretty...

We had some fabric placemats that were no longer nice. They had a rough surface, so I cut them up for dish rags and cleaning rags. Haven't bought a dish rag in over a year.

When I buy towels (bath or hand size) they all start in my bathroom. Once too worn for there they go to dish towels or dish rags. Then when they are too worn for that use they go for general rags around the house or for my husband when he needs something to clean up oily stuff.

Also, I have a serger (which I love) and when the towels or washrags or hand towels leave the use of the bathroom they are serged around the edges not only to re-enforce for better use but also it helps when my husband is assisting me in folding clothes. He knows that anything with a colored serged edge (as if he knows what serge means lol) goes to the kitchen, otherwise it is to the bathroom or obviously the rag bag.
