If you are looking for regular old bike--not one for performance training/competing--consider buying a used bike. Bike stores and repair shops often have lightly used bikes for sale--and the best thing about it is that most bikes have had a full service check out from the store, so you don't have to worry about whether it functions properly. Whereas buying from a yard sale, thrift store or the like, might require a post purchase bike check up to get gears, brakes and tires up to snuff. Of course if you have some bike repair knowledge--then definitely go for the additional savings and fix up the bike yourself.
