Getting the Most Out of Your Turkey

Submitted by: anonymous  03/20/2009 3:42 AM

I purchased a 24 pound turkey at Thanksgiving and then didn't use it as we ate at a relatives so just cooked it last week. We have a regular turkey dinner the first night, turkey pot pie using Pillsbury crusts the next night, then we skip a night and then we have hot turkey sandwiches. Then I take the remaining carcass and what we call turkey yuck, skin, etc. and put it in the crockpot over night. I save the broth and then let the rest cool and squish it extra carefully by hand and pack it in leftover dog food and cat food cans. Out of a $5.27 turkey I got three nights of dinner for three, a tv type dinner for the lady I take care of and 3 cans of dog food and 2 cans of cat food! That much dog food and cat food would have cost me over $3.00 alone.

What great tips! I will also try the pet food can idea.

We have found that if you have a large turkey and don't want to cook the whole thing at once for whatever reason, you have another option. You can ask your local butcher, or supermarket meat dept. to saw the frozen bird in half lengthwise and re-wrap it. They may charge a bit per pound for this service, or not. Another reason to make friends with your butcher.

I have a family of five. When we have turkey I bake it first. Then we have about 2 dinners out of the meat. Then I take the Carcass that has some meat tidbits left and boil it for a while on the stove. Letting it simmer till all the stuck on meat comes off. Then I use a slotted spoon and get all the bones out. What is left is Broth, and Meat. I add a package of Egg noodles that are very cheap, and a can of Veg all, which is fairy cheap. I made soup, and what we don't eat that night of the soup, I freeze. A medium turkey can feed a family of four, about 4 days.
