Giant Popcorn Cans for Food Storage

Submitted by: lilgrama  03/20/2009 9:09 AM

I usually buy in bulk to save $, and I re-use the large cans that Christmas Popcorn come in, spray paint, label and use them as canisters for my rice, beans, flour, sugar, etc. Something I learned from my mom. They are all the same size so they look nice in my pantry.

That's a great idea, but my grandkids always get the popcorn cans so I have to think of different ways to find storage for bulk items.

I learned that stores that order frosting for the bakery departments just toss the plastic buckets and lids, but if asked, they will usually save them for you if you are faithful to pick them up when you day you will.

These will not be washed so be prepared to wash the frosting out of them and allow them to air out for a day or two before putting them into use.

We use the giant pretzel jars from Sam's Club for bulk storage of beans, pasta, etc. I leave the salt in them usually to help prevent grain beetles from growing in them. I find the tops easier to use than those on the popcorn cans, and I like to see which jar is which easily.

popcorn cans, pickle jars and large canisters can be found at yard sales, thrift stores or flea markets.
also check out the dollar stores for storage ideas

after christmas (jan.-feb.) or at the end of school in college towns (may-june) is a great time to go canister hunting.

For smaller items, reuse the plastic ice cream containers as well.
