Kid Friendly Healthy Eating Tricks

Submitted by: JennatFFP  03/20/2009 1:31 PM

Getting kids to eat healthier is good for them but it's also good for your wallet. A large food pallet means you have more sale shopping opportunities at the grocery store. If broccoli's on sale this week but the carrots aren't then, you can save by purchasing the broccoli. The trick is to get the youngster's to eat the food you buy which can be tricky if you have a super picky eater. Here's five tricks to get your kids eating better in no time flat.

Get Covert-Puree the things your kiddos won't eat and mix into other dishes they will eat. Usually it goes unnoticed. This one also works on picky husbands too!!!

Make it pretty! Kids won't eat something that looks "yucky" to them so dress it up whenever possible. Make funny faces, create a fruit pizza, etc. Keeping it fun is key!

Get them involved! I've had tremendous success getting my picky eaters to eat well by involving them in the kitchen and garden. They're much more likely to eat something they've had a hand in preparing.

Present them with PLENTY of opportunities to grow their taste pallet. Serve dishes in a variety of ways several times throughout the month. Your little one may not care for steamed carrot in a honey sauce but may go nuts over raw carrots served with ranch dressing.

Lead by example! Don't expect little Joe or Josie to eat something you snub your nose at! Children are very intuitive and notice when we don't follow our own advice and rules.

Finally don't get discouraged. Developing a taste pallet can take years, then again, some kids may NEVER develop one!

My kids refuse to eat most vegetables, they love the Mac and Cheese and will eat that most days if i let them, I cook carrots and pop them in the blender and puree, add to Mac and Cheese and they never realize that they are eating carrots. One child only wants salad, lettuce only, so I grind up roasted chicken and other veggies, add the italian dressing and drizzle over salad. I find that most of the time I can get the veggies down them if I puree them and add them to a dish.

Tricks are okay, but unless there is a serious deficiency, just keep presenting good food choices and it will all work out.

Try this method. Do not allow kids to eat within a few hours of a meal. Then put a small dab of each food on the child's plate... starch, veggie and meat. Tell the child he must eat all three foods, before he can have seconds. It's okay if he eats only five peas, then goes back for mounds of potatoes. The point is that he ate some peas... eventually he will develop a taste for peas.

The less we try to control their habits the better. Provide well balanced meals and let them chose. Studies show they somehow manage to round everything out, eventually.

Who cares what tastes a child develops? Don't we all still have preferences as adults? Isn't that okay?
Keep changing it up and certainly go back to things they like.

The most important thing is to have a relaxed attitude about it. Sneak it in if you can. I used to put grated carrots in a pb&j. But don"t sweat it. Make it fun. My kids afternoon snack was veggies and dip.

If they are gaining weight and perhaps taking a vitamin everyday, you don't have to make sure they like everything! Fruits have as many vitamins and minerals as veggies. Find out which have what. Educate yourself instead of worrying or even worse yet, forcing kids to eat.

Don't punish them for their preferences. If you went to a friend's house for dinner and she served something appalling, wouldn't you want to eat something later at home? Let them eat when they are hungry. They aren't out to get you. Just figuring things out the way we all had, to as our pallets matured. In the interest of economy, give them very small portions, they can always have more.

Get them involved in menu planning and cooking. This is a sure fire way to get them interested and educate them about nutrition.
