I live over 80 miles away from the larger chain stores. Those stores are typically the ones with the BEST prices on groceries. The problem is the tiresome trip there and back with little ones in the back seat constantly asking "Are we there yet?"
My solution involves a little online research, a few well placed phone calls, a thorough grocery list, and a few snacks and a video game.
I don't normally clip coupons unless they're a really good coupon. There aren't any stores that double or triple coupons within a 100 miles so I don't bother unless it's a bogo free coupon, or gives me a significant discount!
1. Make notes of what you need. This is ongoing throughout the week with a deep look at the list the day before shopping to make sure you haven't missed anything.
2. Scour the online sale ads for the grocery stores in the city. I make notes on my list of the price and store's location.
3. Call the stores for coupon and price match policies and make notes.
4. Get the snacks and video games charged for the kids ride to the store.
5. Load up and be sure to stop at the sale stores to pick up their sale flyers.
6. Shop at the store with a price match policy. I generally shop at Walmart but there may be others.
7. As you're shopping, circle the price match products in the flyer.
8. Separate your groceries when your checking out. Sort them by price match, coupons, and regular purchases. Tell your cashier when she starts to ring you up what your doing and have your flyers and coupons ready.
