| Saving Money on Seasoned Rice |

Over the years I've probably bought over a hundred boxes of seasoned rice. I never really stopped to think that all I was buying was rice and spice in a box. I became curious as to how much of a premium I was paying for this convenience and decided to calculate how much I would save if I just bought the ingredients separately.
I bought a box of chicken seasoned rice and weighed out the contents. The rice came out to roughly 5.3 ounces and there was about half an ounce of spices.

To make the equivalent chicken flavored rice all you need is to buy some rice and some chicken soup base or chicken bullion cubes. I went to Winco which had chicken soup base in their bulk section. You can also add in some carrot, parsley, or celery flakes.

The Savings
You can buy rice for around 50 cents per pound. So that original box of seasoned rice I bought contained roughly 5.3 ounces or 17 cents of rice. The chicken flavored spice cost roughly 20 cents per ounce and there was only half an ounce or 10 cents of spices in the box. So the total cost of ingredients contained in the 98 cent box of seasoned rice I bought came to 27 cents. By buying the ingredients separately I would save 71 cents or 72%. Multiply that 71 cents by dozens of boxes of seasoned rice and it starts to add up.
You can also save money by substituting more rice into your diet replacing more expensive processed foods. Rice is one of the most cost effective staples available. At 50 cents per pound rice works out to roughly 3-4 cents per 100 calories.
Other Mixes
For beef flavored rice you can use beef bullion cubes or soup base. You can also find hundreds of seasoned spice recipes on popular recipe sites or search engines.
