Cheap & Easy Heartburn Fix

Submitted by: anonymous  03/21/2009 5:11 PM

Why spend your hard earned money on expensive Heartburn, Gas and upset stomach medications when you have a solution right in your pantry.

Whenever I get heartburn or an upset stomach I always reach for my favorite quick fix kitchen staple: Baking Soda. Just place a tablespoon or more into a glass of cold water and stir until disolved then drink as many swallows as you can. It will work within a few minutes.

Once you get used to the taste and see how good and fast it works you will be hooked and never waste money on these medicines again.

This can be used anytime for Upset Stomach, Gas, Bloating, over indulgence in food or drink and Heartburn.

Re: "overindulgence in drink," is baking soda a hangover cure too? Do you take it the next day or night before?

I've never heard of baking soda as a hangover cure, but I do know that hangovers are largely the result of dehydration. If you follow every alcoholic beverage with water, you should be fine :)

Beaware; it works great for heartburn but if you have high blood pressure, there is a lot of sodium in it. I would not use it on a regular basis. Besides, get that heartburn checked out if you have it often.

A coworker (she is a nurse) used to use that almost daily and she wound up in the ER. Be careful with it if you have any health problems!!

I am also a nurse and I do not recommend this at all. It is not only much too high in sodium but it is an alkaline base which can upset the acid base in your body. Blood levels of Ph must be kept stable to be functional. This tip should be eliminated as bad advice. I also agree that heartburn is a symptom of an underlying problem-possible ulcers or gasrtic reflux which can erode the esophagus. I am very much against self medicating or offereing blanket advice online. I am sure the contriiiibutor meant well but it is a bad idea.

A drink of seltzer water, which you can buy for $2.50 for about 12 cans in our local Homeland store is also good for occasional heartburn or indigestion. It is low in sodium and therefore not harmful to people with high bloodpressure.

Having a glass of cold milk also helps. And speaking from personal experience, having a few walnuts and almonds also help with acidity.

WARNING! If you look at the fine print on the instructions on the baking soda container, it will warn you about taking it as a medicine when you have over-eaten, as there have been cases of painful stomach expansion and even explosion due to the already over-full stomach expanding from the baking soda. In short, people have died.
