A recent article in Golf Digest, written by the "Frugal Golfer" (our kind of golfer), walks through how to get golf balls on the cheap. While there are online stores where you can find new golf balls at a discount, for really good deals, go "pre-owned" (a.k.a. used/found golf balls).
We had no idea that you could buy used golf balls online (it makes sense -- it just never occurred to us to see if there were companies that sold used golf balls). The two websites noted in the article are cheapgolfballs.com and lostgolfballs.com. On both websites, you can specify the condition of the balls you'd like to order by folling their rating system.
cheapgolfballs.com rating system:
- Grade 1 - The best ball we have - near perfect (almost like brand new!)
- Grade 1.5 - Not quite as good as our Grade 1, very slight scratches / small amount of ink
- Grade 2 - A little too much ink, some discolored, minor scratches
- Grade 3 - Scuffed, scratched or just rough, good for shag bags
lostgolfballs.com rating system:
- AAAAA - Highest quality ball in the marketplace. They are like new in appearance and will feel and play as a new ball would. These balls will include team or corporate logo ball and/or player pen marking. We like to call them "One Hit Wonder" golf balls as it was most likely lost after the first swing.
- AAAA - Good condition with 2-3 dimples of slight cosmetic blemish or minor imperfection. They will include team or corporate logo ball and/or player pen marking. These balls are similar to a new ball after being played for 3-4 holes. The shine and color of the balls may slightly vary, but the integrity of the flight characteristic is not compromised at all.
- AAA - Slightly scuffed or blemished balls that may have minor discoloration. One might find a few good quality x-outs or practice balls in the mix. They will include team or corporate logo ball and/or player marking. No cuts will be found in AAA golf balls. These balls are similar to a ball that has been played for 9 or more holes.
- AA - Looks worn and discolored, with most having scuffs or blemishes. It is appropriate for range and green practice. They will include team or corporate logo ball and/or player marking and will look similar to a ball that was played for 18 holes.
Both websites offer free shipping if you spend more than $85 and $75 on your orders at cheapgolfballs.com and lostgolfballs.com, respectively.
