Free Music: Make Your Own "Mix Tape"

Submitted by: Tip Hero  03/25/2009 2:53 PM

Most things that seem too good to be true usually are. So when we stumbled upon a new music service called MixTape.me, we were (and still are) cautiously excited.

From the user's point of view, MixTape.me is very simple to understand and use: You search for music you want to hear and then either play it right from the search results, or save it to a playlist and play it whenever you want to (saving a playlist requires registration). And best of all, the service is completely free, so you can listen to specific music and songs you want to hear (this differs from another free music service we like, Pandora, which doesn't let you control the artists and songs, though it does do a pretty good job of matching up your requests with the songs it chooses to play (read the Pandora tip here: Listen to Your Favorite Artists for Free w/Pandora.com)).

So what are the negatives? Well, for starters, if you ever dabbled in the peer-to-peer music file sharing world of yesteryear (Napster and the like), you probably remember how you didn't always come away with songs that played in full, were correctly titled, and other user-error issues. While MixTape.me is different from those free peer-to-peer services of the past (the biggest difference being that you don't possess the songs -- you just have access to them through the MixTape.me website and your playlists), it does access music from a number of places, including the SeeqPod MP3 search engine, where you end up with some quality issues from time to time.

For example, we had trouble finding a song by its title. We eventually found it (the song had been titled incorrectly) by searching by artist. Another example: We tried a few songs from the search results, but nothing played -- or, in one case, we only got a few seconds worth. And finally, not every song under the sun can be found through MixTape.me.

Still, it's a pretty cool service and a great way to listen to some of your favorite songs without paying for them. And thus, we come back to the "too good to be true" question. we presume the music industry isn't excited about this service but we're not sure what they can do about it. So for now, we'll just sit back, pop in a mix tape, and enjoy a little music for free while we plug away at the computer or entertain friends.

Imeem.com is also a great site. They are making some music not playable in full, but stated they are working with the recording industry to try and fix that. You can save many playlists, rearrange them, delete and add songs to them, etc. It has a great layout and is free as well (though you have to register to create playlists). I have really enjoyed it, especially since I have been able to find tons and tons of songs on there, even Bollywood ones that would be hard to find elsewhere.

I like to listen to old time radio free. I hardly remember shows on radio myself, but it is theater for the mind.

otrcat.com allows you to download 1 free show (it is always the best show found on that MP3/CD) from each MP3 CD they sell. Since there are hundreds, I have a whole collection that I can play through my speakers.

I don't burn cds, so I really don't know. But I believe you could burn all these to a CD and play them in your car. If you have a newer car, look on the CD player and see if it says MP3. Then it will play MP3 cds.

I use playlist.com. This doesn't appear to be a file sharing site. You make a list of your favorite songs and play them in their entirely and without advertisements. Love it!
