Negotiate Car Trade-in Value Separately

Submitted by: Ray / Tip Hero  05/03/2008 12:00 AM

If you’re buying a new car and trading in the old, some experts say to negotiate those two events separately. First negotiate what they’ll give you for your used car, then once that is nailed down, negotiate the new car price (or vice versa). If you let them do it at the same time, they can play games and erode any savings you were getting on one side by an increase in cost on the other. The most important thing is to make sure you know what each deal is separately and don’t let them combine them and confuse you.
