Invest in a New Toilet-Better Yet a Dual Flush

Submitted by: Urban Sherp  05/03/2008 11:15 AM

Update your toilet--in 1992, a law was passed that outlawed 3.5 gpf primitive toilets in favor of a new standard of low flow 1.6gpf toilets. So, if your toilet was installed before 1992, you should definitely upgrade. Consider a dual flush toilet that has a .8gpf option and you'll reap even more savings. (I bought Toto Aquia dual flush and it is awesome!)If you don't want to invest in a new toilet (honestly, the investment will pay you back within a year in water savings) try putting a brick in your water tank.

Great tip ! I would suggest, though, if they put a brick in the toilet, to seal the brick up in a ziploc bag first. Bricks will tend to deteriorate in water, and it makes a bit of a mess.

Alternatively, fill up a plastic bottle with water and use that instead of a brick.

Here's one you could try for $29. only works on toilets made before 1993, but lets you control the amount of water per flush. great way to save,
