Salvage Oven Heat for Dish Washing

Submitted by: Elaine Van Leuven  04/05/2009 5:05 PM

1) When finished baking. Shut oven OFF and IMMEDIATELY place a 9 X 13 metal pan on top shelf with a few inch's of cool tap water in the oven and shut the door. Eat supper, clean your table off and when ready to wash a few dish's, pull this pan of now HOT water out and pour in a dishpan and proceed to wash as many dish's/glasses with the FREE hot water you made from the left over heat from the oven.

Please be CAREFUL when making hot water this way. Even though your oven was off. I have measured the temp in the pan to be a whopping 135 degrees!!!! Carefully test the water before putting your hands in it.

When finished making hot water, I open the oven door and let the remainder of the heat, warm the kitchen during the winter months.

excellent tip! you can also shut your oven off 20 minutes or more before the end of cooking time because unless you open the door repeatedly it stays warm long after heat is shut off.

incidently it's dishes and inches, not dish's and inch's.

Thanks for your tip about turning the oven off before the timer goes off. I usually just open up the oven and let the heat heat the room, but now I'll save some energy.
(Incidentally, it is incidentally not incidently!)

Thanks for the useful tips!

(Why are you correcting another person's spelling and usage of words? It is inappropriate in this venue, and it is not what this site is for. I would hate to think that someone might be embarrassed from submitting another tip that could be beneficial to many people.)

I open the dishwasher after the last cycle and let the dishes air dry, and let the steam heat the room.

I just saw a tip the other day for saving energy costs too by running the dishwasher in the evening, when rates are lower.

That's a great tip! This might not appeal to some folks, but I have been known to save the water I boil pasta in to add to the bathwater (no shower in our house). You boil the macaroni, put the cassarole in the oven, and then go take a bath!

And now, when I take out the macaroni and cheese, I will definitely be putting a pan of water in the oven to heat for dishwashing!

I love this website!
