Allowances were never earned in our home. Our children had chores because they were part of the family and a family works together.Allowance was freely given but not attached to performance of chores. We never wanted the kids to feel that they were getting payed for their contribution to our family.
Allowances were presented as a sort of a benefit and used as a teaching tool for thoughtful spending and budgeting. The consequence for incompletion of chores was another matter. We wanted to send the message that their help was expected, and appreciated but not paid for.
At 24 and 27 they are responsible adults, fiscally and otherwise.A small thing, but I think this helped. |
