5 Top Wines for Under $6

Submitted by: Tip Hero  04/08/2009 3:11 PM

Most people can't tell the difference between cheap and expensive wines. That's according to a study conducted by the American Association of Wine Economists:

"Individuals who are unaware of the price do not derive more enjoyment from more expensive wine. In a sample of more than 6,000 blind tastings, we find that the correlation between price and overall ratings is small and negative, suggesting that individuals on average enjoy more expensive wines slightly less."
That's good news for those of us looking to enjoy a bottle of wine on the cheap. So in general, we shouldn't be scared away by cheap wines. And if you're looking for specific recommendations for low-cost vinos, check out AOL's list of 5 top wines for under $6:

- Trader Joe's Coastal Cabernet
- Amaicha Torrontes
- Banrock Station Shiraz
- Barefoot California Merlot
- Barefoot California Chardonnay

Good heavens, dude, that list is more than two years old -- you'll find references to it from 2007 -- and is therefore too outdated to use, since wines can and do change in quality from year to year, whether they're vintage-dated or not.

Kroger Grocery sells Bay Bridge wines for $2.97 / bottle. Now that is a great table wine, the Chardonnay, Merlot or Cab - fine price for everyday.

Aldi, in the midwest, has wonderful wines. For $4.99 you can get a very nice German Riesling or Liebfraumilch.

Not only is this a very good, very inexpensive wine ($4.99 a bottle) you gotta love the name Three Blind Moose. The Cab was the best but the Merlot was good too.

I found a wine in Walmarts on one of the end caps, for 2.97, I'm telling you it wasn't bad at all. If you like a glass a night and are on a budget, this is it. Marlene Fl.

had never heard of lostvineyards, so looked it up and found this, can't wait to try it!

“Lost Vineyards searches the world for little known (lost) wineries that produce highly drinkable wines suitable for everyday enjoyment...”

"We are the importer of the wine.In most markets this wine sells for $2.99 per bottle ($1.99 in many stores in NY). We have many selections in the Lost Vineyards portfolio, all at the same price point."

"Lost Vineyards has introduced a white, red, rose, and a Portuguese wine known as Vinho Verde. Vinho Verde has a bit of natural effervescence, says Betters. The company has eliminated several middlemen to keep the wine's cost low."

"We're the exporter, importer, wholesaler, and distributor,"

Crane Lake wines are good at $4-4.50/bottle with a 10% discount on a case. They make a wide selection of wines and I've seen them at ACME and Giant Eagle grocery stores. Their Sauvignon Blanc and Sangiovese wines are really good.
