DIY Easter Egg Dyes

Submitted by: christyp  04/07/2009 12:31 PM

I used to run out to the store to buy PAAS easter egg dye kits for easter, until I learned how easy it easy to make your own dye. All you need is a little food coloring and white vinegar.

Pour 1/2 c. of boiling water into a mug of 1/2 tsp of vingar mixed with 10-15 drops of food dye depending on how deep a hue you want. Then just dip your egg, hard boiled or blown out, into the mug. The longer you leave it in the water the deeper the color.

This is not a DIY tip for the faint of heart, but you do end up with beautiful designer worthy easter eggs and they are toxin free (store bought dye packs can contain harmful chemicals like silicon dioxide, red dye #2, and coal tar). I just really like the more natural look. Martha Stewart would be proud.

If you've got an afternoon for a project, I recommend experimenting with a couple of colors from beets, cabbage, spinach...... I found the 'how to' on curbly.com. they have a helpful video too.

I found a great site that has tons of DIY ways for decorating eggs - wax crayon eggs, vegetable dyed eggs, marbled eggs--lots of fun ideas.
