Home Remedy for Acid Reflux & Indigestion

Submitted by: Susan  04/09/2009 1:55 PM

Several years ago I was watching a PBS special during their fund raising. This particular lady was talking about health and explaining reflux.

The jist of it is not enough stomach acid which in turn does not tell the valve between the stomach and esophagus to close. I was all ears. At this point I was on an acid reducer daily and still eating Tums like candy.

The solution, a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar.

I was anxious to try it, but only had white vinegar on hand, so instead tried lemon juice.

Since that day I have been completely off the reflux medicine, taken very few Tums and seldom have reflux to boot.

I find that ginger also works well for acid reflux and indegestion. I usually take a piece of crystalized ginger before going to bed. Works like a charm every time.

My naturopathic doctor told me 2 Tbsp of lemon juice or apple cider vinegar mixed with water first thing in the morning, and if possible, before every meal. It really helped me as well.

I use the lemon juice and mix it with water I've warmed - helps me wake up in the morning and clear my nasal passages too.

I was on acid reducers as well, but it caused unbearable stomach cramping that put me on the floor and almost in the hospital. No thanks!

I had great success with apple cider vinegar. I just used about a quarter teaspoon or less in water in the morning and evening for five days only and it worked. Also, I try to eat foods like pickles, coleslaw, etc. that have vinegar in them on an almost daily basis.

I also started using a Culligan reverse osmosis filter that adjusts the PH balance of the water. With all of the above, it cured my acid reflux that I had for around two years despite taking Nexium, which did nothing.

This works as well as a teaspoon of baking soda in 1/2 cup or so of water.

I have also had good results with a bit of regular old yellow mustard.

Be careful of the lemon juice remedy if you suffer from gallstones! I found out the hard way when I had a horrible gall bladder attack that resulted in extreme pain and removal of it. See your doctor if you have gall bladder issues.

Actually RAW apple cider vinegar works the best! as well as lacto fermented foods such as sauerkraut and kim chee. Try Braggs Raw Apple cider vinegar. lacto fermented sodas, which ginger ale used to be was an old timer recipe for acid reflux. It's easy and fun to make your own. google 'homemade soda, lacto fermented or visit the Weston Price.org website for info on all kinds of lacto fermented dishes. Swedish Bitters work before the meal which is also very helpful.

This works great because vinegar neutralizes stomach acid.

If you've seen the movie, "Fight Club", you know that chemical burns are neutralized with vinegar.

My daughter, a skin anestician, said that in school they were told to use a product using a vinegar base for skin burns due to chemical peels.

How does one give this tip a good rating?
It certainly deserves one.

Vinegar does not "neutralize" stomach acid. Only a base (such as those found in most antacids) can neutralize an acid. I'm not saying this tip doesn't work, though I must admit that taking an acid to reduce acid reflux seems awfully counterintuitive. But if it works, it works by some other mechanism.

If you have this acid issue very often, be sure to let your Dr know. My then 9 yr old son had it alot and then was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes..it's a very common symptom of Type 1 Diabetes.

In 2005 I was on the fast track to cancer of the esophagus. I was taking the purple pill daily. It made my reflux worse. I awoke every night choking to death with acid trapped in my throat which only spread as I coughed. I stopped taking the pill and began to use the vinegar. I stopped eating past 6 PM and lost 20 lbs. I have not had a reflux attack in 4 yrs. Vinegar saved me from a quick but very painful death.
