12 Inexpensive Stress Busters

Submitted by: Ray / Tip Hero  04/13/2009 4:17 AM

Over the past few weeks I've been reading story after story of people being stressed out over the economy. I've read accounts of dentists seeing more patients coming in with chipped or broken teeth due to grinding their teeth at night from stress. I read a recent NY Times article which highlighted people suffering panic attacks and sleep disorders over uncertainty about the economy. While we may not have much control over the economy there are steps we can take to more effectively deal with stress in our lives. Here's a list of twelve stress busters that cost little or no money:

Comedies – They say that laughter is the best medicine. Rent funny movies or TV shows. You can find a good selection at your local library for free.

Healthy Foods – When I get stressed out the first thing I want to do is grab a pint of Ben & Jerry's Cookie Dough Ice Cream. The sugar rush makes me feel good for a little while but then I come crashing down and get even more depressed. Eating healthy foods keeps your energy levels more stable which in turn stabilizes your moods.

Help Others – The greatest thing about donating your time or money to a deserving cause is that you can't help others without helping yourself. Your sense of self worth rises when you volunteer and make a difference in other people's lives. It also makes you feel part of a meaningful community.

Learn Something – Whenever I get stressed out I always reach out to learn something new. By challenging myself to learn something new like a language or something as simple as a new recipe I feel like I'm growing as a person.

Clean – I've found that bringing order to chaos by cleaning my house gives me a sense of control in my life.

Get Outside – Sometimes life can get so stressful you want to crawl up into a ball and hide from the world. I find getting outside, breathing fresh air, and walking through a park or green space detoxifies the stress out of my body.

Count Your Blessings – I find I spend a lot more time on what’s not going right in my life than what has been going well. I've started to take more time to examine all the things I have to be thankful for.

Turn Off The News – The news bombards us with a constant stream of bad news. Sometimes the best thing you can do is turn it off and tune it out.

Music – I used to go down to a little cafe in my office building to take a break from a stressful job. The cafe would play classical music and I found it completely soothing. I've since moved on from that job but to this day I listen to classical music when I start feeling stressed out and it never fails to soothe me.

Exercise – Just getting out for a walk can have a big impact on your mood. Changing your physiology changes your brain chemistry and moods. Running for example releases endorphins into your system which gives you a runners high.

Concentrate on Something Else - During WWII General Omar Bradley used to do Calculus problems to clear his head and take his mind off the stresses of war. I know a few people who play bridge to take their minds off their daily stresses. Try finding an activity that takes a high degree of concentration to take your mind off what’s bothering you for a little while.

Friends – If something is stressing you out one of the best things you can do is talk it out with a friend or loved one.

I agree that comedies are great when you are stressed and having a tough time. I have just started watching The Ellen Show and it is hilarious. I can't wait to get home every day to watch it because I know I am going to laugh. If you like to read-a funny writer is Fannie Flagg(she wrote fried green tomatoes and several others).
There is also EA(Emotions Anonymous). It is a group meeting for people who have difficulties with their emotions or who are stressed. You can look them up online and fing a meeting near you. They are all over the country. They are similar to other step programs like AA, only for people who want to talk about their stress and emotions in anonymous and nonjudgemental environment. I go once a week and I learn new ways each time from people in the group new ways to deal with stress or my emotions. Hope some of this info brings light to someones day. Love this website!!!!
