Inventory Spices, So You Don't Overspend

Submitted by: The Dollar Stretcher www.stretcher.com  04/13/2009 10:56 AM

When shopping or figuring out ingredients for a recipe, I would forget what spices and herbs that I had in my cupboard. Many times I would come home from the store with a new purchase, only to find that I already had it.

I now keep a list of each container and add the expiration date. I no longer have to dig through my spice cupboard. I have used my list over and over again.

Spices are inexpensive at Food co-ops. They sell by the pound rate. But you do not need to buy a pound. You can go and get a teaspoon full if thats all you need. They supply plastic bags and a place to weigh it. I cook from scratch all the time and I can get a cup of seasoning for 75 cents. Seasoning is light in weight.Besides you can figure out how much it is before going to the check out and budget yourself. Seasonings are always fresh. For example in my area Rolled oats are 69 cents a pound, that's a lot of oats. I make our own granola and it can be served hot or cold.
