Make Your Own TV Dinners

Submitted by: Thrifty Mom  04/14/2009 11:13 PM

Use frozen meal trays with compartments, and after every meal take the left over bits of your entree or your vegetables, etc... and fill the compartments. You don't have to fill the entire tray at once, just make sure they are foods that go together, even if they are from different meals.

I have even mixed up brownie mix and poured a bit into one compartment of each tray. It really does work. Your leftovers don't get pushed to the back of the refrigerator and forgotten and wasted, and you don't have to eat leftovers until you are sick of them.

Just make sure you label your meals, and before you know it, you will have a large supply of frozen microwave meals at a very low cost, and everyone can pick out their favorites.

If you are already buying frozen meals, save the plastic trays, there is no reason why you can't refill them.

This is a great idea! Perfect for nights when you just can't deal with cooking, but don't want an unhealthy tv dinner. was wondering what you cover the trays with when you put them in the freezer? and where to get microwavable trays? thnx

I have done this for years. I called them TV Dinners and we would watch TV while we ate.

One day my boys were eating lunch at a neighbor's house and she told them they were having TV Dinners and asked them to stay. When she placed the tray in front of them they looked at each other evidently in an odd questioning manner. She asked them what was wrong. Scott told her you were supposed to watch TV and eat leftovers and he didn't know what the food on his tray was and would not eat it. SPOILED KIDS!! They came home and requested a real TV Dinner that night.

I make my own TV Dinners. I bought divided plates at the dollar store I got 2 for a dollar and I fill with my left overs and then use my food saver to seal them.

Could also use Ziplock bags I guess but I use the food saver since I own one and they don't get frost bite as fast since we don't eat them very often since I am a stay at home mom.

Also with the Food Saver I think the food tastes much better just my opionion. But this works great for my family and I save a lot of left overs this way.

I cook gluten free, low sodium. For the left overs, I get divided containers and make up gluten free, low sodium meals for my father in law. He gets a variety of hot meals for nights when everyone is on the run and supper does not make it to the table. And we can control the sodium, which is very high in store bought frozen dinners. And he doesn't have to always eat my sister in law's cooking!
