Dollar Tree for Savings on Food Staples

Submitted by: Rechelle  04/16/2009 12:30 PM

We have a dollar tree in Jacksonville, NC with a freezer and refrigerator section. I can purchase most of my basic staples for $1 each or 2 for $1. It has canned goods. When I am in between paychecks, I do all my shopping. They have fresh loaves of sliced bread. I also go to the bread store to save money.

Cooking at home can be fun and it doesn't have to take forever to get a good inexpensive meal on the table.

We only spend about 55. to 75. a week on groceries, and it takes 15 to 30 minutes to get dinner ready depending on what we have on a particular day. My husband and I eat a rotating menu, but still only buy pretty much the same basic staples each week.

We make stir fry veggies with a choice of pork, chicken or beef about twice a week. We also have salmon and rice and veggies or pasta. We often have an omelet for dinner, and we have oatmeal for breakfast. I work at Starbucks, so we get a free pound of coffee each week.

We don't buy instant stuff, and I don't pay more than 4.00 a package for any of the meats. (Stir fry only needs a little meat so it goes a long way.)

My great Dollar Store finds are:

2lbs frozen broccoli cuts/$1
1lb frozen strawberries/$1
1lb frozen rainbow peppers and onions/$1
12 oz sausage roll/$1

Also I'm pregnant and love hard genoa salami, but don't want to pay for a whole pound, so when a crazing srikes, 4 oz/$1.
