Get More Use Out of Disposable Batteries

Submitted by: frugalgramma  04/19/2009 5:33 PM

The last time we replaced the batteries in our wireless mouse, I decided to see if there was any life left in them at all and tried them in my battery operated toothbrush that had recently run out of juice. I was pleasantly surprised that the batteries from the mouse ran the toothbrush nicely for 3 more weeks before going dead.

We are in the process of switching out disposable batteries to rechargeable where appropriate in our home. In the meantime, we will check disposable batteries we thought were done, to see if they are still serviceable for another item before disposing of them.

I haven't used any non-rechargeable batteries in at least 15 YEARS!!!!! Alkaline batteries are one of the biggest wastes of money ever---especially if you have kids!!!!

I use "worn out" batteries in my battery operated clocks. Work great for awhile! I guess they don't "drain" much battery energy.

Remote controls generally don't require much power to operate, and are another good candidate for reduced-charge cells.

Just remember that alkaline batteries produce more voltage than rechargeable batteries. It takes about 12 rechargeable batteries to equal 10 alkaline batteries. For this reason many thing will not operate properly on rechargeable batteries. Medical devices, smoke detectors, and many electronics require alkaline batteries.
Some electronics have a switch in the battery compartment which allow the use of rechargeable batteries.
