Creative Way to Use Every Last Bit of Your Cereal

Submitted by: frugalgramma  04/19/2009 5:52 PM

I always use up the last bit of cereal at the bottom of the box that others in the family seem to pass up, by adding it to my container of "base" cereal, such as corn or bran flakes. The container is big enough to tumble the ingredients every now and then to keep things mixed up, and accommodate the contents of a new box of base cereal when getting low.

I also add raisins, nuts, granola, coconut, dried fruit, whatever. I prefer healthy cereals, but if I end up with a few Froot Loops in the mix once in a while, that's ok, too. I enjoy not wasting money. Also, I keep an extra 1 cup scoop right in the container for measuring portions easily.

I love the last bits of cereal! My husband saves the bottoms of his sugar cereals for me to sprinkle on my plain cereals. It's a welcome retreat from a boring bowl of bran!

Wonderful idea it appeals to my waste not want not. This is an oldie but goodie tip. I take leftover cereals that everyone has lost interest in; put into a container; and crush to roll chicken or whatever else in. Gives meats a different flavor!

The other item my mom used to use the bits of cereal for was as a filler with meatloaf. Sometimes it was dry oatmeal, sometimes old cornflakes, meat extender is meat extender. I tend to buy cereal in cardboard boxes with waxed paper linings. When I finish the cereal, I use the wax paper liner for wrapping food items and then recycle the cardboard box. Voila! No waste at all!

ONE GOOD USE FOR THE LITTLE PIECES THAT BREAK OFF THE VARIOUS SHREDDED WHEAT CEREALS IS TO ADD SOME TO BEEF UP INSTANT HOT CEREALS SUCH AS OATMEAL. ADDS EXTRA FIBER AND IS MORE FILLING.
