Re-use Paper Bags to Drain Grease

Submitted by: frugalgramma  04/20/2009 11:58 AM

We save on paper towels by re-using clean (non-wax coated) paper bags to drain greasy items like bacon, sausage, whatever, after the fry pan or during microwaving. If the bag is a little too big, we just cut it to fit the thickness and amount of area needed for the job. If there is a printed logo on the bag (like some takeout food), we keep that part away from the food . We toss the greasy bag afterward, but it will decompose in the landfill.

We also save clean deli paper to use for cooling cookies and other baked goods on, etc.

There must be a bazillion ways to re-use all kinds and sizes of paper bags that somehow come into our lives. However, if we have too many bags, or the bag is beyond use for another reason, we include it with other paper items for recycling.

Good Idea, I have several uses for paper bags

1. as a rolling surface when making dough or noodles. When finished, I can roll it up and throw it away and we compost so any of the stuck on food is no problem.

2. use a cut paper bag as brown paper covering when mailing a package.

3. a table cloth for kids paint and coloring projects.

4. I use them to line the tops of my cabinets and refrigerator to keep that layer of dusty grease from sticking. Once every month or so, I apply fresh paper and throw the old out- saves me alot of elbow grease scrubbing that nasty build-up off my cabinets.

5. I use them inside my plastic recycle bins to keep the bins clean and I can just pull out the full bag and take to the recycler.

Now that I have invested in several cloth reusable bags, I won't be getting as many paper and plastic bags- I will miss the uses for them but feel better about being "1 Less Resource Waster".

When i lived in South Africa, they used newspaper to soak up the grease. If peeling potatoes put the newspaper down to catch the peels. Just roll up and toss.
