Cool New Yard Sale Mapping Tool

Submitted by: Tip Hero  04/21/2009 10:01 AM

One of the best, and oldest, ways to find a good deal is to go to yard sales. When the warmer months roll around, so do yard sales. Tracking them down and planning your route can be a bit of a hassle, however. But not anymore. Thanks to a cool website we just discovered, you can view yard sales in your area on a map, which can be a huge time saver and, in the end, a big money saver if you're able to scoop up some deals.

The website that maps yard sales is called YardSaleTreasureMap.com. It's a really simple website. Just enter your starting address, the maximum number of miles from your starting address that you want to search, and the day of the week you're looking for yard sales (Friday, Saturday, or Sunday). Then click 'Search', and bingo, you've got a map showing yard sales in your area. Click on a red balloon and you'll see details about a particular yard sale.

So how does it work? Yard Sale Treasure Map pulls data directly from CraigsList.org:

Yard Sale Treasure Map uses Craigslist.org as [its] source for all yard sales. Adding your sale directly to Craigslist will expose your ad to a much larger audience base than you could get by using any other internet-based ad posting service. Plus, it's free! Your new Craigslist ad will appear on Yard Sale Treasure Map within minutes of posting.
So if the yard sale is not listed on CraigsList, it won't show up on the map -- which leads us to a couple of tips for those who are having a yard sale: (1) Make sure you post your yard sale on CraigsList. Not just for the Yard Sale Treasure Map website (it doesn't get a lot of traffic yet), but more importantly to be on CraigsList, which gets a ton of traffic. (2) Make sure you list your address on CraigsList and list it properly so that Yard Sale Treasure Map will be able to pick it up and map it:

In order put craigslist sales on a map, Yard Sale Treasure Map needs to be able to find the address in the craigslist ad. Approximately 90% of yard sale ads can be mapped, however ... Here are some examples:

123 Myrtle Lane, Vienna Virginia, 22182 (GOOD!)
123 Myrtle ln, vienna va 22182 (GOOD!)

Sometimes folks include addresses that are a bit more ambiguous...

Turn left at the horse farm then take a right at the bottom on the hill (BAD!)
At the corner of Myrtle Lane and Crescent Ave (BAD!)
There's also a note from Yard Sale Treasure Map that says they will soon be listing all of the yard sales that they were unable to map, so you can still see them and also add them to the map yourself if you so desire.
