Pawn Shops for Deals on Jewelry

Submitted by: Deborah  04/29/2009 2:12 PM

I like diamonds, but they are not a good investment as you never get back the money you paid for them. Most jewelery stores have a 300% or more profit margin.

I have a lot of nice jewelry that my husband bought for me from our local pawn shop. The only extra cost to me was from having them sized to fit my finger.

Wonderful idea! I absolutely adore "real" jewelry but just can't/won't justify paying exhorbitant prices for it. Brand-new jewelry quickly loses that initial "newness," so I consider secondhand pieces merely "broken-in." I attended graduate school in southern Mississippi and discovered that the Biloxi-Gulfport area, which is home to scads of casinoes, is full of pawnshops offering lots of jewelry treasures. Apparently gamblers exchange their jewelry for gambling money at these shops--many are located right next to the casinoes. When my husband and I return to that area to visit college friends, we browse the pawnshops for special pieces. Thus far my favorite (an anniversary gift from my husband) is a two-karat emerald-cut emerald-and-diamond ring set in white gold that was made in the 1940's--a hometown jeweler appraised it for thousands. My husband paid under 200.00$ for it! As we opted to pay off our student loans instead of purchasing an engagement ring when we first married, this now serves as a belated--10 years!--engagement ring.
