| Why I Love Netflix |

Like most thrifty people I am extremely wary of the monthly fees for Internet, phone, cable, cell phones and so on.
We've never had cable, and were about the last people on the planet to finally get cell phones... we got the $6 per month type. So to me Netflix is a monthly fee that gets added on top of the stuff I already get, and I dragged my feet on this as well.
So over the last decades I have resorted to all the usual ways to watch movies cheaply. I have watched movies on network TV. I have watched movies on my neighbors cable TV. I have borrowed movies from friends, and bought movies at yard sales. Our nearest library is 30 minutes away, and there's a hefty annual fee for out-of-towners. Instead I have gone online and ordered movies from interlibrary loan, but was horrified at what it cost taxpayers to mail a movie to me. I have rarely taken advantage of free theater movies on my birthday, because there's nothing playing that was worth the gas to get there.
Other variables in my situation: I'm retired, and I live in the north east, where winters are quite long. And I really love movies.
So I tried the $8.99 Netflix service and, surprise, I'm very pleased. The website is excellent, and I get an email saying when my DVD will arrive... and they always arrive promptly. If I watch a movie the same day it comes, and put it right back in the mail, I can easily get 10 DVDs a month.
Although you can watch Netflix online as well, this requires the right combination of computer and server. Our rural service is sometimes slow, and so the movie might need to rebuffer several times per movie... depends on the day.
Sometimes I prop my laptop on my exercise bike and watch a movie while I cycle. I've also watched documentaries while I sewed. Sometimes I allow my teenager to watch an online Netflix as a reward.
But here's the big reason why I love Netflix. Prior to Netflix, all of the movies I watched were in some way selected by the tastes of other people. Even movies in theaters tend to be selected based on what "the masses" want to see. For the first time I get to choose. I tend to enjoy obscure independent films, and though Netflix I've watch some gems that I might have never otherwise encountered. |
