| Stock up on Small Appliances at Yard Sales |

When we see small appliances at yard sales at very cheap prices and in like-new condition, we buy them as back up.
We store all these items on the same shelves on our workshop. I've bought extra hand mixers, blenders, coffee perkers, waffle irons and so on. This way, when one of my kitchen appliances dies, I don't need to replace it at retail prices. As my children have grown up and left home, they've raided the shelves as well.
When I buy blenders, I try to exclusively buy Hamilton Beach, which appears to be the most common brand. Despite the vintage of the blender, the blender jars and bases are always interchangeable. So if I break a jar, or burn out the motor in the base, I can match up another jar and base combination. I will also buy a up blender jars minus the base. I haven't bought a new blender for nearly 30 years.
I also stock up on portable sewing machines... well, I bought a Sears/Kenmore as a back up. It's green so I'm thinking 1970s vintage. It was only $5, in perfect working condition, and included an instruction manual and extra bobbins. I thought I might find someone who needed a machine. A couple months later my usual machine needed a replacement part, and in the meantime I used the $5 one for my winter sewing projects. I like older machines that are made of metal rather than plastic. |
