25 Free Places to Visit

Submitted by: Tip Hero  05/04/2009 6:27 PM

We recently discovered an article from Reader's Digest that profiles 25 destinations within the United States that you can visit for free. And while this article might be from 2008 -- it notes gas prices at $4 per gallon (at least in our neck of the woods, it's closer to the low $2 range right now) -- its ideas are still applicable to today, this summer, or whenever.

The list covers places all over the country, and some of them are close together so you could plan a trip around a few of these. For example, while there's lots to do and see in the Washington, D.C. area, a lot of the sight-seeing can cost money, but these three don't:

4. Cemetery Walk - Arlington, Virginia
5. Gallery Tour - Washington, D.C.
6. Panda Party - Washington, D.C.

1. Rocket Launch - Cocoa Beach, Florida
2. Flight Check - Kitty Hawk, North Carolina
3. Citizenship Ceremony - Charlottesville, Virginia

And there are so many natural wonders in this country that are worth seeing...

12. Natural Wonder - Niagara Falls, New York
16. Mountain Picnic - Boulder, Colorado
19. Tree Gazing - Humboldt County, California
21. Red Rock Climbing - Sedona, Arizona
23. Diamond discovery - Murfreesboro, Arkansas

...not to mention all of this country's history -- and not just in Washington, D.C....

7. 9/11 Memorial - Shanksville, Pennsylvania
11. Bridge Crossing - Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts
17. Native History - Southwestern Montana
22. Siege Site - San Antonio
25. Historical Hike - Mountain Park, Georgia

And please share with us your favorite free places to visit -- whether they're on this list or not -- by entering a comment below! We'd love to hear from you.

There are many, many more free places in DC - all the monuments and memorials, all of the Smithsonian (Museum of Natural History, Air and Space Museum, Museum of History and Technology, National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery), National Archives, Supreme Court, Library of Congress, National Zoo. If a person checks the web-sites of the various Smithsonian museums ahead of time, there are frequent additional free events - e.g., Asian movies on Friday nights at the Freer Gallery, family activities, lectures. There are also some great free seasonal activities such as the Festival of American Folklife which is on the National Mall around July 4 every summer.

Parking and food are expensive at many of these free venues so it is worth bringing much of your daytime food. All of the cafeterias will let you sit there to eat your own brought-in food. I used to bring lunches and allow my kids to each pick out a treat to buy (a soda OR an ice cream OR chips). The Metro (subway) system offers both one day and weeklong passes that can be moneysavers if you plan to take several Metro trips per day.
