pricing depends on your location. it is still a savings though.

If you find that you are unable to forgo the land line you can request a measured line, it is 8.00 a month, the down fall is that you can only make 25 outgoing calls a month, but when your thinking you don't need the line, it shouldn't matter.

Also, you may want to check and see if anyone else sells internet in your area. I have a company called Starnet Wireless and they do dry hookups too. My internet is only 22.87 / month. There is also a referral abatement if you refer someone to them, so the internet can be almost free if you refer all your friends.

If you have a home security system such as ADT or Brinks, etc., you will still need a land line for it to work. Please check before you disconnect!

For my family, a landline is a waste of money. We spent over forty dollars monthly for land lines and then one day figured out that we only used prepaid cellular.
That's when we made the big leap to a phone free house. And, it's really worked for us. Now we use AT&T prepaid cellular for calling each other and SKYPE or other free online VOIP phone to call non-network phone customers.
Currently, we're using AT&T DSL and the quality is nowhere near as good as broadband.
My DSL signal goes down about once every two hours. Very inconvenient!
So far it's not worth the 20.00 monthly that I'm paying. But I guess for twenty bucks savings over regular broadband, I could learn to live with the inconvenience.

I do this with Verizon. They even gave us a discount for one year. $28.00 a month. It will be $40.00 after that year. Unfortunatly we live in a small rural area and Verizon is the ONLY phone/internet service. Our only other option is cable and it's WAY more expensive.

Only in America (USA) do consmers permit huge communication giants to provide sch low quality and expensive commnication services and products. Europe and Asia are far ahead on price, quality and service. We have become a nation of ignorant consmers that believe everything the media spews.

EMERGENCY almost all cell phones do not work with 911 so if you drop that dial tone you could be endangering your family. cell phone calls to 911 go to central site maybe not even in your state. They then ask you what county you live in, then transfer you there this takes many seconds longer than a direct connect provided by a land line that is assigned to your home, and a dispatch is ready even before you say your problem. this problem is also an issue with voip.

I would like to chime in on my personal experience with 911 and cell phones. I live in rural Illinois. We had a heck of a storm blow through here knocking down power lines, cutting off communication with phone lines, and even cell towers were damaged by straight line winds and a EF2 tornado, this happened exactly one year ago this month.
Our cell phone still worked and when I called 911 our local 911 Service answered and they also patched us into county and Emergency Management. This could have been because wicked weather had been forcasted and the departments were given a notice about 12 hours in advance, I did not think to ask which 911 service I called, I was a little preoccupied. I only asked if we could come out of shelter so to see what damage has been done.
So the 911 service worked in our case and that was with a cell tower hanging on part of the major power tower after it being blown there by the tornado. The link provided has the picture of the tornado as we saw it right before it hit.

We have also used our cell phone to call 911 and it went directly to our local dispatch. No problems. In fact, all cell phone are required to keep you open for 911 calls even if you have no service, just keep your phone charged. So even if you don't want to have cell phone service, just pick up a used phone at a thrift store, from a friend or use your old one and keep it charged in the car as an extra.

I have been told that you can get a ADT/Brinks call to your cell phone if you have voice over internet phone service. However, no one can tell me how this is done. Can anyone advise if this is accurate or not, please? I don't understand how this could work. Thank you.
