Healthy Breakfasts for $1

Submitted by: ktkat  05/06/2009 3:46 PM

Saw this article on WebMD about 10 healthy breakfasts that you can make $1. 5 were for fast food restaurants, but that's not my cup of tea.

Here's a list of some easy ones to make at home. The article included detailed price tally, nutritional info and recipes:

Mixed Berry Satisfying Instant Oatmeal Total $0.93: 1 package Quaker Take Heart Blueberry Flavor, cook as directed with 2/3 cup low fat milk instead of water. Sprinkle 1/3 cup chopped strawberries or frozen raspberries over the top.

High-Fiber Breakfast Bagel Total $1.01- whole wheat english muffin, high omega-3 eggs mixed with 2 tbs egg substitute Start with a toasted 100% whole-wheat bagel or English muffin. Cook egg covered over medium-high heat, throw on slice of reduced fat cheddar cheese

Breakfast Yogurt Parfait Total $1.05 : 3/4 cup low fat yogurt, 1/2 cup fresh fruit, 1/2 cup whole grain breakfast cereal (granola, grape-nuts etc

Tea & Toast Breakfast Total $.90 (w/cheese) or $.63 (w/peanut butter): don't think you need a recipe for this one, just make sure you buy 100% whole wheat bread and reduced-fat cheese or natural-style peanut butter for added protein

For complete details and a recipe for moist Almond Oat Breakfast Bars, read the article in full:

breakfast is the CHEAPEST meal to make. that's why i am always shocked to see belgian waffles selling for 6.95!! more than twice the cost of my entire bag of waffle mix. that's why we eat breakfast out very rarely.

tea & toast just does not get me through the day. find that i need a little protein, so i often add a hardboiled egg to my breakfast.

Did't know that a wheat bagel' had less fat then the white guess its more important, to read the back 'of the table of contents in back of the package.

Want to make it to lunch without feeling starved and ravenous? Eat one bag of oatmeal mix with water and microwave 1 minute. One apple or a hard boiled egg and voila, no hunger pangs!

Cheaper yet - put 1/2 cup of instant oatmeal in a bowl (I buy a huge container at Wal-Mart for under $2.25) then add 1 cup milk and microwave for 2 minutes or so. Take out of microwave and add a little honey or sugar and fruit......this has got to be even cheaper and so good for you!! Oatmeal and milk have a lot of protein in them.

Instant and bags are always more expensive, though more convenient.
