$1 Fresh Fruit for Lunch

Submitted by: anonymous  05/09/2009 2:15 PM

As food prices skyrocket, very often a single serving of fresh fruit costs $1 or more, especially out of season. Increasingly we have opted for alternatives that cost less per serving... frozen OJ, frozen fruit, applesauce, raisins, fruit from the marked-down cart and so on. And since the rule is five fruits AND vegetables a day, we increasingly opt for cheaper veggies like raw carrots, over fresh fruit. As for fresh fruit, we most likely choose bananas.

But when I am away from home running errands, and get hungry midday, a $1 serving of fresh fruit no longer seems expensive. Suddenly fresh fruit becomes a cheap lunch... or at least something that will tide me over until I get home. I adore grapefruit, which costs about $1 each in my region of the country. I peel it and eat it like an orange, and feel very full. Citrus fruit eaten with the membrane is known to provide a feeling of fullness for a long time. I might also buy some wonderful big apple, possibly trying out a new variety. If I buy a very juicy fruit, such as a big peach, I pick up a napkin at the deli or salad bar.

It takes about the same time to hit the grocery store, as it does to go through a fast-food drive through.

Great tip.

If you have an Aldi Supermarket near you this a great place for cheap but good fruit and vegetables for lunch.

They have, for instance, eggs for 98 cents a carton - about half the price of a conventional supermarket. Boil 6 or 8 eggs at the beginning of the week and you have great lunch time additions or between meal snacks.

They have bags of baby carrots for 99 cents - again about half the price of a conventional supermarket.

Cans of mandarin oranges for 49 cents make great lunch additions as well.

Bananas at 45 cents a pound are the cheapest I have found anywhere.

So for cheap nutritious lunch additions less than $1 definitely check out Aldi supermarkets.
