Cloth Napkins & Napkin Rings

Submitted by: anonymous  05/09/2009 4:10 PM

We've used cloth napkins in our house forever. These are a mismatched collection that I have picked up at yard sales. Cloth napkins can be used several times before they need to be washed. To keep used napkins straight, every family member has his own napkin ring. These too are mismatched... one-of-a-kinds found at yard sales. We collect these up after meals and keep them in a basket in the dining room.

Over time some rings have been replaced as we found ones that were unique to family members, often reflecting a hobby or color preference. In addition, regular guests in our home, such as boyfriends, have also been assigned rings... it's a way of welcoming them into our family. One boyfriend, now fiance, brought his own... a vintage wooden ring in the shape of a funny fat man. He was very proud of this, as he found in a junk flea market for less than a dollar.

I love this idea! My family of neat freaks have been paper-napkin junkies for years but recently began using cloth napkins. Although we initially made this switch due to environmental concerns, the financial angle was also a factor. We are slowly building a "napkin wardrobe" with the help of thrift stores, garage sales, and other thrifty sources; so far, my great favorites are a set of 1970's "Vera" (the designer of scarf fame) napkins with a daisy motif. I bought 8 for 1.00$.

I've used cloth napkins for nearly 50 years and always have napkins in my weekly wash. We even use diferent colored washcloths with napkin rings in the camper during the summer and the same one will last all weekend. No blown away paper towels or napkins.
