Cloth Napkins Instead of Disposables

Submitted by: tomo  05/24/2008 3:58 PM

use cloth napkins and cloth towels instead of paper napkins and paper towels. while you do have the upfront cost of the cloth items, they're still not very expensive and over time will save you money. if you're concerned about having dirty napkins and towels, buy extras so you can always have one or two in the rotation while you're washing others. and you don't always have to wash them in the washing machine. sometimes, I just run them under water for a few seconds and then hang them up to dry and use again. I used different napkin rings for each napkin to make sure I keep track of which napkin belongs to which person, as I don't think anyone wants to share a napkin that has been used without a serious wash (even if you are family).

We've always used napkin rings and usually manage to use the same napkin for several meals. Each family member has their own unique ring and we have extra ones for guests. I buy the shop towels at Costco and just keep them in the kitchen drawer so we never use paper towels. Over time I've replaced most of my old kitchen towels and just use the shop towels. Five years ago I also made 16 napkins from after Christmas clearance fabric for holiday use. Just cut squares and hemmed them on my machine.

I use bandanas for cloth napkins. Each person has a different color. I keep 12 on hand so I will have plenty. Bought mine at a thrift store for 25 cents each. My way of going green---save the trees!

I have always used cloth napkins, and it's funny but when I have guests for dinner they often seem reluctant to dirty my napkins! I always buy them when they are on clearance and they last forever, I've had some for 20 years, they are a bit worn and faded but they still work!
