Get Married When It Blooms

Submitted by: anonymous  05/17/2009 1:39 PM

I wanted to get married on my parents' property, which has two large old apple trees. In years prior to the wedding I made a special note of when these trees were at the peak of blossoming. I chose my wedding date for the Saturday closest to when I knew the trees would be their prettiest. We got married under one of these trees. By doing this I needed to buy fewer flowers for my wedding day.

My younger sister is also getting married at our parents' house, in about three years when she finishes college. She wants to get married in the fall. She has picked out a spot with maple trees. The trees have branches low enough to make a pretty backdrop for the ceremony. In the next few years she will pay close attention to when these maple trees are at their color peak, and will pick her date based on that.

I also know a woman whose garden supplied the flowers for her daughter's wedding, and so that wedding date must have also been chosen based on when her flowers would be at their best.

A similar strategy would be to choose a date based on when your food garden is producing your most elegant crop. If it's strawberries, plan reception food with many strawberry recipes. For example, chocolate-dipped strawberries are elegant and easy to make.

How do you make chocolate dipped strawberries? What is the best chocolate to use? They do always look so gourmet and elegant.

Our cookbook just called for regular chocolate chips, both chocolate and white. You can either carefully microwave, or melt them in a double boiler. There are decorating options so that each can have both types of chocolate. (Hard to explain, but it's an easy internet search.) You simply hold the berry by the stem, covering about two-thirds, then let sit on waxed paper to harden. Let it harden a little before decorating, with a second color of chocolate.

We do the same with pretzels, and then decorating them with sprinkles or other colored dipping chocolates. These always make a nice (and quick) gift, and can also be stored in the freezer for weeks.
