Touching up Finish on Pet-Scratched Doors

Submitted by: anonymous  05/20/2009 9:05 PM

Maybe this is obvious. I spent about ten minutes this evening and touched up four doors that had been scratched by pets over the last few years.

My upstairs has woodwork and doors with a dark reddish stain. I currently have the worst cats for scratching doors when they want to be let in. I have tried to get kids to leave their doors open, so animals will not scratch... but kids are even harder to train than pets. The kids have also banged and nicked doors and woodwork.

I finally got around to picking up an 8-ounce can of Minwax oil-based penetrating/sealing stain. I picked the closest matching shade of stain. It is a simple matter to rub this stain into the scratches and nicks, as the raw wood absorbs it. I just used a tip of the rag, rubbing hard to remove excess from areas that still have finish. The sediment that settles to the bottom is particularly good for the worst areas as the color is most concentrated.

This simple process does a surprisingly good job in concealing scratches that were down to yellow wood. It doesn't fix any indentations that you can see in certain lights, of course, but in low light it is almost as good as new.

This $5 can of stain will probably last a few decades.
